Rajasthan Temples And Shrines
A north western state of India Rajasthan has been the blend of varied cultures from ages. The state has been dominated by great Rajput and Mughal rulers leaving behind their rich culture which has been reflected in their architecture of temples, forts, palaces and shrines.
8-12 century was the period of architectural movement. During this period there were many exquisite carved temples and shrines. The architecture of the temples of Rajasthan included plastic ornamentation which comprised of motifs of foliation and curvaceous feminine forms. It reflected the affinity for nature and aesthetics. All these huge and elaborately decorated edifices show how extraordinary the craftsmanship was then.
Dilwara temple in Mount Abu is one of the greatest examples of the intricate carvings done on the marbles. It shows how much the artisans were talented in giving it an architectural inspiration to today’s world.
Temples of new style and new architecture emerged in 8th and 9th century during the dynasty of Gurjara Prathihara from Mandore. The temples built during this period were Ossian Temples at Jodhpur and temples of Chittorgarh.
The specialties of these temples were, there was a main spire which was called shikhara with detailed carved external chamber. These solanki styles of architecture can be seen at Kairadu, a Hindu shrine in western Barmer. It was also known for sculpted murals.
In 10th century many Jain temples were made in south of Rajasthan and Ranakpur. The best example would be of Jain temple which is in Jaisalmer.
