Mehrangarh Fort Museum, Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort Museum is located in Jodhpur Rajasthan and considered to be one of the highest fort in India. It is situated on a height of 400 feet above the city and is surrounded by thick walls in all its side. This museum will give you the glimpse of lifestyle of royal families and some of their belongings.

The foundation of the Mehrangarh fort goes back to the year 1459 during the reign of Rao Jodha. Many alteration and addition were done to the fort by the successor of Rao Jodha.The fort consist of many monuments inside the huge boundary Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal, Seesh Mahal, Daulat Khana and Sileh Khana.

Mehrangarh Fort Museum consists of many galleries which are all dedicated to particular themes. The fort is impressively laid down into museum which gives opportunity to its visitors to have peek into the history of the royal families and lifestyle they had, their weapons, paintings, portraits, utensils used in household and lots more.

One interesting thing you will see here is Elephant’s Howdas, which was like a compartment seat made of wood. These are put on elephants back and it was embedded with gold and silver sheets. There is a Palanquin section in the museum where you can see Palanquin for both ladies and gentlemen of the nobility, while the covered palanquin was made for women and open palanquin for men. “Daulat Khana”has collection of some fine arts of Mughal period. Weapon section has some amazing collection of sword hilts in silver, jade, rhino horn, ivory, shields studded of pearl, rubies, emeralds, guns and their barrels were both embellished with gold and silver. Further you will also come across the section of varieties of turban which is considered as very ubiquitous head gear in Rajasthan. There is a “Jhanki Mahal”, a window screen from where the women of the house used to see the outside world.
