Alwar Government Museum
Alwar was a premier kingdom in the Matsya dynasty established in 1500 B.C. This city has been a witness to many battles right from the Kauravas, Pandavas, Rajputs, Mughals and to the imperial rule of the British. Alwar Government Museum situated in the Vinay Vilas Mahal in the City Palace of Alwar reflects the heritage of Matsya dynasty to this day. It was established in 1908 and since then has attracted a majority of connoisseurs from world over.

The museum is segregated into three sections. The first section exhibits marvelous sculptures and inscriptions that depict the history of this region. The royalty has been since time immemorial been associated with hunting excursions. In this section several skins of predators such as lions, tigers and leopards are on display. The second section of the museum is dedicated to arts and literature. It constitutes of beautiful paintings from the Mughal and Rajput school of painting dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries. And precious manuscripts written in Persian, Urdu, Arabic and Sanskrit are a must see as well.
Some of the most sought after Persian documents are Gulistan of S'adi (the Garden of roses), Bostan (the Garden of Spring) and Waqiat-e-Babri (Mughal Emperor Babar's autobiography). The copy of the Mahabharata painted by the Alwar School of painters is a unique antique in this section. The third section displays an impressive collection of armory including shields, swords and daggers belonging to the reigning royals of yesteryears.
Alwar Government Museum India also has an assorted collection of musical instruments, bidri work, ivory work, brass and pottery works from Jaipur, Multan, Ceylon and Bengal and stuffed animals. While planning a visit do have a look at the timings (10 am to 4.30 pm) and holidays (Friday and Gazetted holidays).
