Junagarh Fort
Junagarh Fort was built by the 6th ruler of Bikaner Raja Rai Singh Ji, who was a general in the army of Mughal Emperor Akbar. This fort has been the unconquered till today’s date.
The fort is surrounded by the high walls and deep moats. There are only two gates for entrance and 37 bastions which guard the fort, the main entrance was named as ‘Suraj Pol’ or Sun Gate. The Junagarh Fort has survived all the attacks in the past except the short term stint by Kamaran who did capture the fort but couldn’t retain his victory for more than 24hrs.
The fort in inside has about 37 palaces, pavilions and temples made of red sandstone. The palaces comprises of minutely carved windows, towers, kiosks and balconies. The ‘Moon Palace’ is adorned with mirror works, paintings and carved marbled panels which is very attractive. The flower palace or ‘Phool Palace’ is decorated with mirrors and glass. ‘Karan Mahal’ was built for the pleasant memory after the defeat of Aurangzeb the Mughal Emperor.
Junagarh Fort also comprised of multi-storied ‘Anup Mahal’ was used by the rulers as a governance chambers. Now the rooms are well maintained it displays the belongings of the royal family for its visitors to see. You will also get to see Dungar Niwas, Ganga Niwas, Rang Mahal and Vijay Mahal. The fort museum has some great collection of jewelry, manuscripts, jars and carpets, arms and weapons.
This Fort of Bikaner in Rajasthan is very famous among the forts. The architecture of the building is worth exploring.
