Gangaur Festival

Festival of Gangaur holds great significance in the life’s of the people of Rajasthan. The word Gangaur is derived from two words, 'Gan' and 'Gauri' which are synonyms of 'Siva' and his consort 'Parvati' respectively. Gnagaur is celebrated in and around Rajasthan during the month of March and April. This is the time when the entire city gets together for a grand scale celebration to retain the tradition and culture. The festival is meant mainly for the women. The festival is very religious in nature devoted to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. To conduct the ceremony, women dress up in their best attire. The idols of gods are decorated and carried in a traditional procession covering different parts of city. This long march is then followed by dancing, singing, and performing other cultural shows.

The festival of Gangaur starts on holi and continues for 18 days. During this time all the women keep a day long fast and eat only one meal in the entire day after offering prayer to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Gangaur festival is celebrated with great excitement in all the cities of Rajasthan.
