Camel Festival, Bikaner
Rajasthan is a desert full of camels and is referred as the “ship of desert”. The camels are symbolic of endurance, strength and beauty. Bikaner is the only breeding center for camels in the country. Bikaner was an inaccessible land until the advent of modern transportation ways, but the survival of the people has always been dependent on camels since ages. The Camel festival is held every year by the Rajasthan Tourism Department in collaboration with Art and Culture Association of Rajasthan.
The Camel Festival takes place at the Junagarh Fort of Bikaner. You will be amazed to see the different species of camels that are brought here from distant places for sale and purchase. Camel Festival showcases several cultural programs along with competitions such as tug-of-war, camel dance, acrobatics, best camel breed and camel race. There are many stalls in this fair from where you can buy souvenir and handicraft items like bridle jewellery, jingling anklets and neck pieces as souvenirs to take back home.
The festival is held between the months of October and March. One of the main attractions of this festival is the Camel Dance that is unique and to see this tourist from all over the world visit this festival. The parade of beautifully decorated camels tapping on the soothing beats of musical drums displaying an amazing synchronization of footwork is truly a magnificent sight to watch and awe inspiring experience.
To reach Bikaner you can drive or use the rail. If you wish to reach in limited time you can fly to Jodhpur and than drive to Bikaner covering a distance of 243 Kms.
