Urs Ajmer Sharif
Ajmer Sharif is one of the highest visited tourists spot in the country and considered as the biggest shrine among the Muslims but still is frequented by all the religions in the world due to its beliefs and popularity. The “Urs” is a wide scale celebration held in the fond memory of Khwaja Muinnddin Chisti popularly known as “Gareeb Nawaaz” in Ajmer. The Dargah Sharif in Ajmer is a place where the Muslims saints was buried and “Urs” is one of the largest Muslim fair in India. During this time Ajmer city receives an endless in flow of tourists of all religions and the hotels and lodges are booked to capacity. There is a mosque inside the dargah built by Mughul Emperor Shah Jahan. Ajmer Sharif is considered as a holy place to seek blessings.


The Urs (death anniversary) is an annual festival celebrated during the first six days of Rajab that is the seventh month of the Islamic calendar in the month of May at the dargah. On the 1st of Rajab, the tomb is washed with rose water and sandalwood paste and perfumes. This ritual is called ghusal. The tomb is then covered with an embroidered silk cloth by the Sajjada Nashin. This is the time when devotees from far off land gather here to offer ‘nazrana’ at this holy spot in form of jasmine flowers, sandalwood paste, perfumes, chadar, ghilaph, and neema. The environment becomes totally musical and heavenly when the Qwallas who are professional Sufi singers sing beautiful ballads in the praise of the saint outside the dargah. The festival concludes with firecrackers on the sixth day along with a poetic recitation called mushaira where poets recite compositions dedicated to the Khwaja. At night there is an arrangement for mass prayer for the well being of entire mankind.


The nearest airport to Ajmer is Jaipur Airport from where regular buses and taxis come to Ajmer. The city is well connected with direct trains from most places in India, so traveling to Ajmer is not difficult.
